Grain Import Framework: Invasive Pests in the Grains Pathway
A new report, March 2013
The focus is the protection of Canada’s agricultural resource, while maintaining its trade relationship with the continental United States and minimizing trade impacts.
“The CFIA is Canada’s National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) and administers the Plant Protection Act, preventing importation, exportation and spread of pests.”
“Prevention is King: Risks are increasing and pest interceptions by the CFIA are on the rise.”
Invasive plants cost the agricultural industry more than $2 billion yearly in North America. 80% of Canadian agricultural pesticide expenditures are on herbicides to control weeds – over ¾ of these are alien species. Uncontrolled competition over the season can reduce yields by half. Some of these noxious weeds are tolerant of commonly used herbicides.
Phytosanitary Import Requirements should be followed.
